The Hyundai Elantra and Hyundai Tucson have evolved into some of the most appealing vehicles in their respective classes. They boast roomy and refined accommodations, excellent amenities, easy drivability, and eye-catching style. They also deliver top-tier driving confidence, thanks to their advanced engineering and cutting-edge safety technologies. The two vehicles demonstrated this last month by earning Top Safety Pick+ awards, the highest possible designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The achievement is particularly notable, as the organization recently updated its crashworthiness evaluations to be even more rigorous.
What is a Top Safety Pick Rating?
To qualify for a Top Safety Pick designation, a vehicle must earn the highest possible score of “Good” in driver and passenger small overlap front, moderate overlap front, and a new, more energetic side crash test. It must also offer available “Good” or “Acceptable” headlights and “Advanced” or “Superior” ratings for forward collision mitigation technology. Front crash prevention system tests include daytime and nighttime evaluations of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-passenger performance. A Top Safety Pick+ (plus) rating is reserved for vehicles that have “Good” or “Acceptable” headlights as standard equipment.
The Hyundai Elantra earned “Superior” daytime and nighttime pedestrian tests, while the Tucson earned a Superior daytime rating and an “Advanced” nighttime rating.
“This is great news for our recently refreshed Elantra sedan and Tucson compact SUV, two of our highest-volume models,” said Brian Latouf, Hyundai Motor Company’s global chief safety officer. “We made it a priority to improve our vehicles’ safety engineering to meet the more stringent Top Safety Pick+ testing requirements recently instituted by IIHS.”
The 2024 Tucson and Elantra bring Hyundai’s Top Safety Pick+ awards to five under the stricter testing standards, joining the 2023 Palisade, 2023 IONIQ 6, and 2024 IONIQ 5.
